Teaching procedures

Step 1: Warming-up

1、Greet as usual.

2、Let students enjoy a song named The Rainbow and ask them what the name of this song is. The song goes like this:

Look at the rainbow,

The rainbow,

The rainbow.

Look at the rainbow

In the sky.

Red, orange, yellow,

Green and blue,

Purple and violet too.

Invite students to answer the question. Then tell them that the name is The Rainbow and show a picture of the rainbow when the rain stopped and the sun came out. Finally, lead into the topic-Look at the rainbow.

Step 2: Pre-listening

Show some fruits to students with the help of objects and ask students “What is this in English?” Guide students to answer “It’s an apple and it is red.” After that, show a banana and ask students “What color is this banana?” In the end, students can learn these new words and sentences.

Step 3: While-listening

1、Extensive listening

Read the passage for students and ask them to answer what the speakers are talking about by giving them a tip: catch the keywords.

Then invite one student to show the right answer: rainbow.

2、Intensive listening

Play the tape for students and ask students to answer two questions:

Q1: How many colors are there in that rainbow?

Q2: What are these colors?

Then lead students to fill in the chart on the blackboard. Meanwhile, emphasize the target language: what color is this? And the response: it is…

3、Ask students to read after the tape for the last time and tell them to imitate the intonation and pronunciation.

Step 4: Post-listening

Divide students into groups of three and ask students to act out this conversation. 5 minutes are given to prepare. Then invite some groups to share their performances.

Step 5: Summary and Homework

Summary: invite one student to be a little teacher and summarize today’s lesson. Ask students to enjoy beautiful things and colorful life.

Homework: ask students to design all kinds of beautiful rainbows on their own and hold an exhibition next class.

Before listening, learning vocabulary is a good way to clean the obstacles for listening activities, which helps students to understand the information about the listening material.

To make the students learn these color words better, I used real objects as my teaching aid. First, I showed them apples, bananas and grapes. These fruits are familiar to the students and they can recognize them quickly in English. Secondly, I asked them to describe the fruits and then guided them to express the color of the fruits. Finally, I ask students to tell the colors of other fruits with the target sentence pattern, so that students can learn the color words while describing fruits.

In short, vocabulary is learned and used in a real context.

Teaching procedures

Step 1: Warming-up

Greetings.

Play a short video about the Forbidden City and ask students the following questions:

Q1: Where is it?

Q2: Whose home is it?

Q3: How do you describe it in English?

Then introduce the topic of this lesson naturally through sharing their answers of the above questions.

Step 2: Presentation

Read the passage for students and ask them to find out the main idea. Then invite a volunteer to share his/ her answer.

Ask students the following questions:

Q1: Where is the small garden?

Q2: Where is the kitchen?

Q3: Where is the bathroom?

Later, check the answers with students and write down the three phrases: “on the left”, “on the right”, “in the center of” on the blackboard.

Teach the pronunciation of the phrases and emphasize the liaison between center and of. Then, teach the meaning of these phrases by using the picture on the book.

Give students more expressions such as “turn left”, “tun right” and “center around” and emphasize the different part of speech of the words.

Step 3: Practice

Fill in blanks

Give students some sentences and ask them to fill in the blanks with the correct phrases. Then check the answers together.

Describe pictures

Give students several pictures and ask students to describe it using the expressions they’ve just learned. Then choose some students to describe these pictures in front of the class by playing a game named Hot Potato.

Step 4: Production

Ask students to work in groups of four and discuss the layout of their homes. 10 minutes will be given for discussion. During their discussion, walk around the classroom and give help if necessary. Then invite some groups to share and give some evaluations.

Step 5: Summary and Homework

Summary: ask students to recall what they have learned together and then invite one student to summarize today’s lesson.

Homework: ask students to make a new design for their homes and try to describe them in English using the expressions they have learned in this class.
